About Me
I was first introduced to clay at the age of fourteen and have worked with it, on and off, ever since. I studied ceramics at Bristol Polytechnic in 1989, where I had the privilege of being taught by Walter Keeler and Mo Jupp—two deeply influential and inspiring potters.
Thirty years later, after a career teaching and running the Art Foundation course at Abingdon and Witney College, I am now a full-time potter. I began with hand-built forms, working at the kitchen table, before moving on to throwing on the wheel. Today, I work almost exclusively on the wheel, producing vessel forms. My work draws on a wide range of influences. The forms reference historical, cultural, and contemporary sources, brought into the present through the use of experimental glaze techniques.
I am drawn to ceramics as objects in their own right, and to the space they occupy between function and art. I find the process of transforming earth into an object of beauty completely absorbing. A defining quality of a handmade piece is its singularity: the visible human imprint gives each work its own character and presence. There is a connection between maker and object, which is renewed when the piece finds its owner.
